The Warning Signs Your Home is Under-Insulated

High Energy Bills 

The most obvious sign would be a higher monthly energy bill. If heat has been leaking out of your home because it’s  under-insulated, you should notice a spike in power consumption as your heating system works double time to keep your home comfortable.

Inconsistent Indoor Temperatures 

Another warning sign is fluctuating temperatures. Are certain rooms in your house colder than others? Inspect your HVAC unit and air ducts to see if they’re clean and working properly. Even a well-maintained furnace won’t be able to distribute warm air evenly throughout your home if heat keeps leaking out of gaps in your home’s insulation.

Damp and Cold Walls, Floors and Ceilings 

You should also keep an eye out for moisture building up on the surface of your walls. Drywall and paneling could feel cold—and damp—to the touch if there isn’t enough insulation. Insufficient wall insulation is also the most likely culprit behind a spike in your home’s power consumption, given that up to 35% of regulated air inside can be lost. Ice Dams 

Don’t forget about your roof. Warm can reach your roof if your attic isn’t well-insulated, melting the snow on top of the roof. As the melted snow slides down, it freezes, resulting in ice buildup at the edges of your roof.
